The estate
Tenuta Odegitria is born from the desire of the owners to revive the traditions of the past and to an artistic and cultural heritage that bears witness to the simplicity and industriousness of the people of the place.
The owners’ family (parents doctors and two sons aged 16 and 17) who lives in the central complex of trulli, “I Trulli del Massaro,” is committed to ensuring, in compliance with the privacy, a pleasant and peaceful stay guests offering a B & B or holiday home among the scents and flavors of Puglia.
The farm is located in the Itria Valley, a charming valley surrounded by three hills on which stand the towns of Locorotondo, Cisternino and Martina Franca and which also extends into the territories of Alberobello and Ceglie.
The name of the valley has its origins in the discovery, in an underground church in the countryside of Martina Franca, an ancient icon of Our Lady dell’Odegitria (literally the “Presenter”, the Guide of Wayfarers) currently housed in the Church of St. Anthony to the Basilian Capuchins in Martina Franca.
The landscape is among the most evocative of the region is characterized by large farms created as units of feudal agrarian class of wealthy families but later fragmented into small stamped property to the settlers.
The latter, driven by strong need for survival, used the stones obtained the clearing of the land and tanks to build shelters for animals and work tools: the trulli, the typical circular structures isolated or in small groups, built of dry, ie without binder.
The need for a continued presence of the farmers in the vineyards, has transformed the trulli in permanent housing and therefore structurally adequate to the needs of family and work: “THE CASEDDE.”
The farmers of the Itria Valley is credited with having transformed a barren, rocky in nature fertile area.
Among the main crops viticulture occupies a prominent position, at the end of the 900 even touched a surface equal to 48% of the land. Among the cereal crops prevail: wheat, barley, oats and forage legumes rooms are spread between the beans, beans, chickpeas, peas and lupins. Among the woody species are reported almond, cherry, but especially the olive tree which yields an excellent oil.
Historical significance has played a tree-like plant: the fig tree, which has played, in the power of locals, a role of primary importance. Among its many varieties indicate the Dottato and Brociotto, white or dark.
The flora of the Valle d’Itria is characterized fragno, quercina variety that grows wild in woods and majestic pure or mixed with oak or holm oak. Among the wild tree species are present: the wild pear, strawberry tree, wild cherries, ivy. The herbs, edible and aromatic plants, grow almost everywhere: ciucuriedde, l ‘Avena fatua, butcher’s broom, wild asparagus, the lampagione, Parietaria, nettle, oregano, sage and mauve. The natural environment is subject to the drastic reduction of forest areas in favor of the cultivated areas.
